Green: I can win the title

Jamie Green is confident that he can take the fight for this season's DTM championship right down to the wire after his challenge fell away in the last three races of 2008

The Briton was level on points with Mercedes teammate Paul di Resta after eight of 11 races, but scored just one point in the next two events after being knocked off by Mattias Ekstrom at Catalunya and finishing 10th in the rain at Le Mans.

But Green believes he can win the championship, especially if Mercedes can make a strong start to the season. All of the marque's drivers had to play catch up in 2008 after trailing Audi for the first few races.

"I've achieved all the things that are there to achieve without winning the title - wins, poles, podiums and being consistently in points," Green told autosport.com.

"I've always been one of the top drivers in the team, but I've not yet challenged for title right at the end, and that's the aim. I was in strong contention for three quarters of the season until Barcelona, which was the turning point for me, and this year I want to go all the way.

"It's important to get up to speed in the first race, to get the most out of the new car from the beginning. We weren't as good as we could have been from the off last year and Audi were very quick at the beginning. By the end we'd caught up but that made it hard work for all drivers in team.

"It is difficult though, because the car is not really the complete finished article until the last possible moment before the first race. You don't really know what the full package will feel like until you get to Hockenheim."

The Mercedes drivers will begin testing a prototype version of next year's car from the end of January.
