DTM Hungaroring: Edoardo Mortara on pole as Audi locks out top eight

Championship contender Edoardo Mortara grabbed pole for Saturday's opening DTM race at the Hungaroring as Audi dominated qualifying

Abt Sportline driver Mortara led for much of the session after the initial timed runs, before Jamie Green jumped to provisional pole inside the final five minutes of the 20-minute session.

But Mortara saved his best until last, setting a fastest lap of 1m35.282s after the chequered flag had fallen to usurp Green by 0.082 seconds.

With the Audi RS5 set at only five kilograms above its base weight of 1105kg, the lead two duo led an Audi lockout of the first four rows with all eight of the manufacturer's cars qualifying in the top eight.

Abt driver Miguel Molina will share the second row with Mike Rockenfeller, while Molina's team-mate Nico Muller took fifth ahead of Adrien Tambay.

Timo Scheider and Mattias Ekstrom completed the Audi rout in seventh and eighth respectively.

Felix Rosenqvist put in a stellar performance to get the best out of his Mercedes C63, set 25 kilograms above the weight of the Audi, and the Swede was best of the rest in ninth.

He outqualified championship leader Marco Wittmann, who was fastest of the BMW contingent in 10th.

Wittmann, who has a 33-point advantage over Mortara in the championship, was 0.611s off the polesitter's time, and he heads fellow BMW drivers Tom Blomqvist, Martin Tomczyk and Timo Glock on the grid.

Mercedes' main title contender Robert Wickens qualified 18th.
