Opel and Dunlop say the tyre problems that decimated the Russelsheim marque at the Sachsenring DTM round was caused by a drain cover

Drain blamed for Sachsenring blow-outs

Manuel Reuter, Jo Winkelhock, Uwe Alzen and Eric Helary all suffered identical right front blow-outs of the Dunlop control tyre used in the series.

The Sachsenring, with its series of high-speed corners, is notoriously hard on tyres and an initial theory was that the Opel V8 Coupes over-stressed their rubber by running excessive camber. But now Opel and Dunlop are satisfied that the failures were caused when the cars hit a concealed drain cover by going wide on the exit of one of the circuit's fast left-handers.

"It's not a tyre construction or a car problem," said Opel sport boss Volker Strycek. "It's a race track problem, and a little bit a driver problem too. For the drivers, it was not possible to see the drain cover because it was hidden by the grass."

Double Sachsenring winner Klaus Ludwig's Mercedes suffered an identical puncture on its slow-down lap after winning the first race.,
