Bruno Spengler takes victory on second day of DTM Show Event in Munich
Bruno Spengler triumphed on the second and final day of the DTM Show Event at Munich's Olympic Stadium after his rival Edoardo Mortara crashed out
Mortara had beaten Spengler by 0.3s in Saturday's final after the pair emerged as the top drivers from the Audi and Mercedes individual events.
But on Sunday, it was Spengler who came out on top. The Canadian took his HWA Mercedes to victory in the first of a pair of five-lap races that would make up the final, and was then handed the win on a plate when Mortara hit the wall in his Rosberg Audi during the second, blocking the track and forcing the race to be abandoned.
"It's a great feeling to have won this first DTM Show Event at the Olympic Stadium here in Munich. It was tremendous fun driving on this circuit and soaking up the atmosphere," said Spengler.
"The track is first rate and every race was incredibly close. Today's result certainly made up for yesterday's final against Edoardo.
"I was very pleased to see so many fans turn up in the stadium, and I hope they'll be back to see us again soon for more DTM racing."
Spengler was one of three Mercedes drivers to make it into the last four, the championship leader beating Persson man Christian Vietoris in his semi-final while Mortara overcame Renger van der Zande.
A couple of bruising encounters earlier on featured heavy crashes for fellow Mercedes drivers David Coulthard in the quarter-finals and Ralf Schumacher in the opening round.
Prior to the opening round, Saturday's first eliminated drivers from each manufacturer, Susie Stoddart and Miguel Molina, were given the chance of a reprieve against the next slowest driver from Mercedes and Audi respectively.
Both triumphed in their battles against Maro Engel and Rahel Frey, but neither made it beyond the first round as they were paired against eventual finalists Mortara and Spengler.
