Alesi sets record straight

Formula 1 legend turned DTM star Jean Alesi has set the record straight on his widely reported speeding offence in France recently

Alesi has apologised for the incident, and admits he was in the wrong, but has complained that inaccuracies were reported in many publications, internet sites and radio stations.

"I was clocked at 181kph, as opposed to the 191kph reported on all the radio stations and the internet, on a motorway which, as it is supposed to be, is limited to 130kph," said Alesi. "I was wrong, and do not contest this, I totally accept that I committed an error. Nobody should exceed the set speed limits, not even professional drivers and not even on motorways. I therefore paid my fine of €750.

"On the other hand I find it regrettable that the French police divulged the incident, hitting out at a public figure like myself, as many people jumped on the issue and a lot of incorrect information and distortion of the real facts have been published.

"Contrary to what has been said, my drivers licence was returned to me, since it was issued by the Swiss authorities and not by the French. I can therefore drive throughout Europe at my own free will. However, I have to respect a one month's suspension of my driving privileges in France. Once again, I assume full responsibility and acknowledge my mistake. You learn from your mistakes and I will try to behave better than this in the future."
