Adria: Albers takes first win
Christijan Albers won his first DTM race in only his second start with the factory AMG Mercedes team at Adria in Italy today (Sunday)
The Dutchman had to play second fiddle to team-mates Bernd Schneider and Marcel Fassler early on, but Schneider was hit by a drive-through penalty for speeding in the pit lane (as was Jean Alesi) while Fassler had two slow pit stops which opened the door for Albers to score his first ever DTM win.
"I didn't expect this," he said. "It was really tough out there - every lap was really heavy. I had great pit stops, my team did a perfect job, and I've got to thank everybody who helped get me this drive with the works team."
Mattias Ekstrom drove a storming race, passing team-mate Laurent Aiello, Schneider and Fassler in the closing stages. Aiello followed him like a shadow to grab third, which seemed unlikely after he started 11th, while Fassler and Schneider were fourth and fifth.
Peter Dumbreck was again the first Opel home in sixth position, but ran as high as second during the pit stop cycle. "My next aim is to get on the podium," he said.
