Formula 3 European Championship leader Antonio Giovinazzi is set to make his DTM debut this weekend at Moscow Raceway, standing in for Timo Scheider.
Audi's two-time champion will miss the event, suspended as part of extended penalties handed down by Germany's DMSB on Wednesday for the "push him out" drama at the Red Bull Ring.
While Audi does not have a designated 'reserve' along the same lines as GP3 driver Esteban Ocon's role with Mercedes, Giovinazzi is backed by Volkswagen in F3 and has tested Audi's RS5 DTM racer.
AUTOSPORT understands the 21-year-old Italian has already travelled to Russia.
Giovinazzi sampled Moscow Raceway last year in Formula 3, finishing 13th, 16th and 10th in the circuit's three races.
