Speedworks to run trio of drivers as cover for Newsham in BTCC test

British Touring Car team Speedworks Motorsport will run three drivers in Dave Newsham's Toyota Avensis at the official BTCC test at Snetterton this week

Newsham, who currently lies 10th in the standings, is unable to appear at the test alongside team-mate Ollie Jackson.

Instead, Speedworks will run club racer Richard Hawken - who campaigns an ex-David Leslie Nissan Primera Super Tourer - and British Endurance Championship competitors Chris Jones and Ian Loggie.

Jones and Loggie tested with the squad at Donington Park earlier this year, but it will be Hawken's first run in an NGTC machine.

Team boss Christian Dick said: "These guys are all potential future drivers, and this is a great opportunity to get them in the car.

"We don't intend to burden them with pressure in terms of workload or expectation of how quick they should be - it's purely a chance for each of them to gain experience."

Hawken has been considering a BTCC effort for some time. "I want badly to have a crack at this," he said.

"The chance to have taste of NGTC machinery takes me a step closer to what I'm working towards, which is to be part of this great championship in the future."
