Newsham parts ways with Geoff Steel

Dave Newsham will not race at Thruxton's BTCC round this weekend after parting company with Geoff Steel Racing

Newsham parts ways with Geoff Steel

The reigning Renault Clio Cup champion graduated to the BTCC this season with GSR's normally-aspirated BMW, but after a difficult Donington Park round earlier this month, Newsham has switched to the Special Tuning Racing squad to drive a turbocharged SEAT Leon alongside Tom Boardman.

"There were issues we couldn't resolve and we decided to go our separate ways," said the 44-year-old, who will drive for STR from the Oulton Park round in June.

"It looks like the SEAT is a good car and has a massive amount of potential. I have met the team at their HQ in Forton and was very impressed with their set-up and car preparation."

Newsham believes having a team-mate, rather than running in a one-car team, will also be an advantage.

"The data is always going to help," he said. "Tom and the team know the car inside out."

Geoff Steel confirmed his team will miss the Thruxton round but is talking to "two or three different people" about filling the seat later in the season.

"Once Dave realised there was a second car with Tom I think he had half an eye on that," he added. "I think front-wheel-drive will suit him and he'll do well.

"We need to make sure we've got someone we can depend on. The BTCC is a serious commitment for us."
