Jordan tops Silverstone practice

Andrew Jordan was a surprise pacesetter in today's practice for the latest round of the British Touring Car Championship at Silverstone

After going second quickest in the morning session, the Eurotech Vauxhall driver found almost half a second with a minute of the afternoon running left to top the times with 1m00.650s.

Tom Onslow-Cole was only 0.005s slower than Jordan in his Arena Ford as cars powered by turbocharged engines set the pace on Silverstone's straights-dominated national layout.

Snetterton polesitter Alex MacDowall was the best of the Chevrolet drivers in third, while Tom Chilton - quickest in the morning session - rounded out the top four.

Matt Neal and Jason Plato, who were carrying 36 and 45kg of success ballast, were fifth and sixth quickest for Honda and Chevrolet respectively, both within 0.3s of Jordan's time.

Steven Kane was the best of the BMW drivers. The Motorbase man sat in second place midway through the afternoon session, but was bundled back to seventh by the end.

Paul O'Neill (Tech-Speed Honda) split Kane from his Motorbase team-mate Mat Jackson, while Gordon Shedden's Honda completed the top 10.

Phil Glew, who is returning to the BTCC this weekend in a SEAT Leon powered by the TOCA engine, was 16th quickest, but still within a second of the pace. Significantly, he was only 0.050s slower than his Special Tuning UK team-mate Tom Boardman, whose car uses a Super 2000 powerplant.

Lea Wood missed the morning session due to an engine problem with his Wood Honda that was causing the water and oil to mix. He went 20th quickest during the afternoon.

Martin Johnson was not at Silverstone as he is attending his son's wedding. The Boulevard Team Racing driver has been given a dispensation to start Sunday's opening race from the back of the grid.
