Jordan inherits first BTCC pole

Andrew Jordan took his first British Touring Car Championship pole position at Donington Park as qualifying ended in dramatic style

Jordan's Vauxhall team-mate Fabrizio Giovanardi ended the session with the quickest time of all, but he was stripped of his pole-setting 1m13.171s when his Vectra failed to start on the weighbridge after the chequered flag had flown.

As a result, he was stripped of all his times and put back to 19th on the grid, allowing teenager Jordan to inherit the top spot, thanks to his time of 1m13.277s, which came mid-way through the half-hour session.

Harry Vaulkhard produced a magnificent lap only 0.016 seconds slower than Jordan to claim the best grid spot of his BTCC career in second for rookie Chevrolet team Tempus Sport.

Former champions James Thompson and Jason Plato shared the third row in their Team Dynamics Honda and RML Chevrolet respectively, the former scoring his best grid spot since 2006.

Practice pace-setter Stephen Jelley was fifth quickest in the best of the WSR BMWs, ahead of Rob Collard. The Motorbase BMW driver had earlier failed a ride-height test, resulting in all his previous times being chalked off, but made up for it later on.

Colin Turkington was seventh quickest in the second WSR car with the Vauxhall of championship leader Matt Neal - carrying 45kg of success ballast - sharing the eighth row.

Completing the top 10 were Jonathan Adam who, like team-mate Collard, failed a ride-height test early on, and Mat Jackson's RML Chevrolet.

Alan Morrison claimed the best grid spot for Arena Motorsport's Ford Focus in 13th, while his team-mate Tom Chilton was 16th - a marked improvement on the squad's Thruxton form.

Three drivers will start behind Giovanardi on Sunday's race one grid: Martyn Bell, Dan Eaves and Nick Leason.

Bell failed to complete a flying lap after spinning his Tech-Speed Honda at Goddards and sustaining minor damage, while Eaves and Leason did not make it out of their garages owing to engine and clutch problems sustained in practice.
