Gordon Shedden not convinced about British Touring Car rule tweaks

Several changes were announced last week, including amendments to the boost equalisation system and driver penalties, while the use of a soft tyre was also introduced.

Shedden, who took his first BTCC title with Honda this season, believes it would be better if the boost levels were just left at their pre-season baseline.

"In an ideal world you would just have a power figure, say 350bhp, and everyone builds engines to that," Shedden told AUTOSPORT.

"I realise the engines are different so need different boost levels, but once set I don't think you should have adjustments. Then it's down to the teams and drivers to develop the chassis.

"If you do have changes, they should be to individuals rather than teams. Then it doesn't matter who your team-mate is and if you have a bad weekend you won't be penalised by your team-mate having a good one."

Shedden is also unsure if the soft tyres, one set of which can be used per weekend, will have the desired effect.

"I think a lot of people will use the soft set in the same race so it won't make any difference," he added.

"There are a whole lot of questions - how will it work on the car? Will it be quicker over a race run? Will it give an advantage of 0.2 seconds per lap or two seconds? But it's something else in the mix."

Shedden does believe, however, that the grid penalty for repeat driving standards offences is positive.

"It's something in the right direction," he said. "If you stay out of trouble it won't affect you, so long as it's consistently enforced."
