Ford star Reid believes mitigating circumstances clouded the BTCC points situation and, instead of a badly designed voting form which lost him the big prize, it was the dropped scores and weight handicap systems that worked against him.

"I'd like to re-run the season again, because I know I'm at least as good as Alain [Menu] and Rickard [Rydell]," he said. "It was so close, it could've gone any way and, on this occasion, it went to Alain. OK, Rickard scored a lot of pole positions, but I'd argue that was because he was inconsistent in the races and he often qualified on pole because he wasn't carrying any weight. With the weight penalties in place, that meant a my consistent approach, which has won the title in recent years, didn't work as well as it had previously."

Reid outscored every other driver in the BTCC, but was forced to score a zero after an irregularity was found with the electronic brain of his Ford Mondeo at Croft.

"The thing which let me down was the loss of points from Croft over the ECU," he added. "I wasn't allowed to use that zero as a dropped score, and on reflection that cost me. The problem was found after qualifying and even if I'd started that race from the back of the grid and not scored anything, it would've been enough for me to win the championship."

Despite his near miss, Reid is determined to chase the BTCC crown again, although he has yet to find a drive for 2001.

"I really do feel I've got some unfinished business to attend to. Without doubt, in my mind I can win this championship. But I feel I've learnt a tremendous amount from this year and I've really worked on my driving, whereas in the past I've relied on getting my equipment to do what I wanted it to."

If he can't pursue his BTCC dream next year, Reid will turn his attentions to the DTM or Australian V8 Supercars.
