Feature race: MG does it again

Hughes had an early skirmish for the lead with team-mate Anthony Reid, but grabbed the advantage when the Safety Car was deployed in the middle of the pit-stop window. Morrison and David Leslie had clashed at Graham Hill bend and Leslie's Proton had hit the wall hard, the Scot was unharmed, but less than amused.

Reid had already pitted from the lead, but when the race stalled down again, it was clear that Hughes's stop, along with those of Paul O'Neill, Morrison and Harvey - taken just as the safety car was deployed - had given them an advantage.

Hughes defended solidly as O'Neill tried everything to find a way past, but it was the Astra that cracked first. Gear selection problems dropped O'Neill back behind first Morrison and then Harvey. Morrison was happy to settle for his first podium of the year, though he felt he was quicker, while Harvey was delighted with third in the non-works Peugeot.

The battle for fifth was where all the fun was. Reid, Muller, Neal, Aaron Slight and Andy Priaulx fought a brilliant no-holds barred scrap. Reid was not alone when he claimed: "That was the best racing I've seen since pre-wing Super Touring days." He stayed ahead, from Muller, Priaulx, Neal, and the aggrieved Slight, who felt he'd been treated with something much less than respect by Muller and Neal.

In BTC Production, Norman Simon took the win again from James Kaye, who just missed out on clinching the title and Gavin Pyper. Pyper had led for a while, but spun at Druids after a whack from Simon. "I owe him one," said the Scot, who reckoned that Simon was quite a bit quicker than him and should have been able to find a way past without contact.
