Brands 2: Turkington joy as MG triumph

Colin Turkington took a dramatic last gasp victory in the second of today's two British Touring Car Championship races at Brands Hatch after championship leader Yvan Muller made an uncharacteristic mistake. It was Turkington's first win in the class and wrapped up a superb weekend for MG after team-mate Warren Hughes had won the first race

As the field pulled away from the safety car on the last lap, Muller locked up and went sideways into Paddock which allowed Turkington to nip through on the inside. To compound the Frenchman's misery, Anthony Reid, in the second MG took a dive up the inside into Druids and both cars went into the gravel trap.

Muller had dominated the race. He took the lead at the start from poleman Hughes who was suffering with maximum ballast after winning the first race. He then controlled the race, soaking up pressure from Turkington throughout and didn't even lose out in the pit stops.

Muller's nearest championship challenger James Thompson had a torrid weekend. He was clouted at the start by Matt Neal's out-of-control Honda, then spun on the following lap trying to pass Hughes around the outside of Paddock. He would eventually finish just in the points in tenth place.

Paul O'Neill finished second for Vauxhall having spent most of the race pressuring Reid, but like Alan Morrison who finished third, benefited from the last lap incident at Druids. Reid finished fourth and Muller fifth and Hughes sixth.

"I'm over the moon," said Turkington. "I was lining up a move on Yvan [Muller] at Paddock anyway because my car has been good through there all weekend, but I couldn't believe it when he went wide. The car has been awesome. I'm just lost for words."
