Autosport Awards voting process opens with Rider of the Year category

The voting process for the 2019 Autosport Awards is beginning, with Rider of the Year presented by Tata Communications kicking the process off

Autosport Awards

The Autosport Awards are a series of awards presented by motor racing magazine Autosport to drivers that have achieved significant milestones each season. Some of the presentations are selected by the general public via a reader's poll.

Autosport Plus subscribers and Autosport magazine readers decide who wins motorsport's premier awards each year, with the 2019 ceremony taking place in London on Sunday December 8.

Over the next month the nominees in each category will be revealed on Autosport. Votes can be cast either online or by post using the form in the November 7 issue of Autosport magazine. Voting closes on November 30.

The first category to open for voting is Rider of the Year, presented by Tata Communications.

This contest pitches the stars of MotoGP against their road racing counterparts and the World Superbike Championship field.

Marc Marquez's crushing run to a sixth MotoGP title inevitably makes him a strong contender for the Award - which he has won every time since it was added to the line-up in 2016.

But his opposition includes the man many expect to be his biggest MotoGP threat in the seasons ahead: rookie sensation Fabio Quartararo.

Peter Hickman is the first competitor from the road racing world to make it onto the shortlist for this Award, following a season that has featured Isle of Man TT glory, a North West 200 win and an astonishing sweep of victories in all seven races he contested at the Ulster Grand Prix.

Autosport's sister title Motorsport.com carries comprehensive WSBK coverage and the Superbike world's dominant force Jonathan Rea is in the hunt for the Award again.

Rea's fifth title was achieved in very different fashion to his previous successes, as he had to overturn an early 61-point deficit to Alvaro Bautista after the MotoGP convert's spectacular start to the season, but he still sealed the crown with two rounds to spare.
