Montreal, 1978: No Place Like Home

Gilles Villeneuve's first Formula One win was the stuff of fairytales; his first taste of success coming before a deliriously happy home crowd in Canada. Here's the original race report as published in Autosport on October 12, 1978

If the Canadian Grand Prix organisers had written their own script for the inaugural Formula 1 race at their new Montreal circuit, they could not have asked for more.

The 26-year-old Quebecois, Gilles Villeneuve, had the crowd dancing for joy as he clinched his first ever GP victory at his home track - exactly a year after he joined the Ferrari team.
