Button bounces back

Jenson Button put the speculation surrounding his Formula 1 future behind him to record the fastest time on the final day of testing at Monza. BMW Williams driver Button went 0.6sec clear at the top of the time sheets despite suffering a blown engine

As the threat of Montoya replacing Button at Williams looms ever larger, the young Brit's composure remained intact. He completed 50 laps during which he posted the fastest time and carried out aerodynamic set-up work in preparation for the Canadian Grand Prix.

The McLaren duo of Coulthard and test driver Panis were close behind Button. Despite being plagued with software problems they managed to finish second and third fastest respectively.

Jos Verstappen put in the fourth fastest time closely followed by Jacques Villeneuve who tested varying aerodynamic set-ups on his BAR 02. Team-mate Zonta, meanwhile had to use the T-car that had been set up for Darren Manning. The Brazilian was hindered by gearbox problems and managed to complete only 10 laps.

All drivers were using a soft to medium Bridgestone tyre - the same compound will be used in Canada.

A testing race awaits Button in Montreal. He must not only prove himself once more on a circuit he does not know, but if he is to maintain his credibility he simply has to out pace his team mate who will likely be Bruno Junqueira standing in for the injured Ralf Schumacher.
