Monza test day two
Mika Hakkinen gave a clear response to those who have criticised his motivation, by topping the times in today's Monza test. The McLaren driver overcame problems in the morning, when he failed to set a time, to beat next fastest runner Pedro Diniz by nine-tenths of a second
The test was marred by another heavy accident (see separate story), but this did not stop most of the runners completing a significant number of laps of the Italian circuit. Only Sauber's Mika Salo failed to set a competitive time.
Minardi's Gaston Mazzacane once again figured in the top runners. The Argentinian was fifth fastest, behind Rubens Barrichello and Jarno Trulli. Benetton and BAR once again ran young hopefuls Antonio Pizzonia and Darren Manning
Both these drivers are targeting a race seat in F1 next year. In addition WilliamsF1 ran Bruno Junqueira who is described as "40% likely" to race in place of the injured Ralf Schumacher at the Canadian Grand Prix.
To that end, the team practised a large number of pitstops with the Brazilian.
Testing continues tomorrow (Thursday).
