Jason Plato says the 2012 BTCC title fight won't be a Honda whitewash

Jason Plato MG BTCC 2012

British Touring Car star Jason Plato believes this year's championship is wide open ahead of this weekend's opener at Brands Hatch.

Double champion Plato has joined the Triple 8-run works MG squad for 2012. A lack of testing with the new car means Plato just wants some points for Brands.

He thinks reliability issues for the other teams running new NGTC machines, such as the works Honda squad that took Matt Neal to the crown last year, could leave the door open for outfits like Motorbase and WSR with S2000 chassis.

"I don't think Honda are necessarily favourites," Plato told AUTOSPORT. "They know their car better, but I've heard they've had some issues.

"I think Motorbase and WSR will be in the mix. The BMWs with the turbo engine should be tasty.

"We must respect everyone at this stage."
