Simon Pagenaud confirmed in Sam Schmidt Motorsports IndyCar team for 2012

Simon PagenaudSam Schmidt Motorsports has officially confirmed that Simon Pagenaud will join it for the 2012 IndyCar season.

The long-anticipated deal between the Frenchman and Schmidt's Honda-powered squad was formally announced at a press conference in Indianapolis today.

Pagenaud made his IndyCar Series debut in three stand-in appearances for HVM and Dreyer & Reinbold this summer.

Those outings marked his return to American single-seaters after a three-year absence in sportscars with Acura and Peugeot. The 27-year-old had previously won the 2006 Atlantic title then impressed in a single season of Champ Car in 2007.

"The series represents the most competitive racing in the world right now, and I am really looking forward to the challenge of racing in a single-seater again," said Pagenaud.

"I have to thank Sam Schmidt Motorsports for giving me the opportunity and to continue with the Honda engineers at HPD. It is the best situation I could wish for.

"I know 2012 will be a big challenge with the new Dallara chassis and being on a new team but, quite frankly, that is what is so interesting. To fulfil a lifelong dream to race an Indycar and to compete in the Indianapolis 500 is a special time in my life."
