Miguel Molina heads first DTM practice at Brands Hatch for Abt Audi squad

Miguel Molina was a surprise pace-setter in the opening free practice session for this weekend's DTM round at Brands Hatch.

The Spaniard took his old-spec Abt Audi to the head of the timesheets with 12 minutes of the session remaining, his time of 44.776 seconds around the Indy circuit knocking Ralf Schumacher off the top spot.

With the quickest times generally coming with 10-15 minutes remaining, Edoardo Mortara moved his Rosberg Audi - also an old-spec model - into second, 0.036s adrift of Molina.

Mucke Motorsport duo Maro Engel and David Coulthard were the top Mercedes drivers in third and fourth; the former setting his best time right at the end of proceedings. Mike Rockenfeller was the best-placed of the newer-spec cars in fifth in his Abt Audi.

His team-mate Timo Scheider was next up, ahead of Schumacher's HWA Mercedes and Christian Vietoris - who headed the times for over 45 minutes in his Persson Mercedes.

Mattias Ekstrom, who won last time out at the Nurburgring, was ninth for Abt with Renger van der Zande completing the top 10 for Persson.

Championship leader Bruno Spengler was down in 12th for HWA, but was only 0.3s off the best time, while 0.8s covered the whole field.
