DTM unveils format for Olympic Stadium event in Munich

Bruno Spengler DTM 2010 Munich

The DTM has unveiled the format of next weekend's non-championship event at Munich's Olympic Stadium.

The Race of Champions-style event, which is being held in a bid to bring the DTM closer to the fans, will run over two days and feature a different competition each day.

The Saturday will feature inter-manufacturer races, with Audi drivers taking on each other and Mercedes racers doing likewise through four rounds.

The initial round will feature the nine regular drivers from Audi and Mercedes, with the quickest eight from each manufacturer progressing to the quarter-finals, and each subsequent round being a knock-out.

There will be both an Audi and Mercedes final with the winners of each taking on each other in a grand final to decide Saturday's winner.

Sunday's action will feature only the 16 drivers that made Saturday's quarter-finals, and will kick-off with the quickest car from the previous day's first session taking on the slowest during the quarters, the second fastest battling against the second slowest and the rest of the draw following suit.

Unlike on Saturday, Audi and Mercedes drivers will take each other on from the start and each race will feature a mandatory pitstop, with the winners of the two semi-finals taking each other on in the day's final.
