McLaren set to break its duck

McLaren Mercedes is confident that the first win of 2000 that it needs to get back on terms with Ferrari, will come at Silverstone this weekend

Mika Hakkinen, the defending drivers' champion, is a massive 24 points behind Ferrari's Michael Schumacher, but believes that the German's winning streak could be about to end.

"I really like Silverstone since it is a very challenging circuit and really fun to drive," said Hakkinen. "We want to win the grand prix this weekend and the team is working hard to help us achieve this objective."

And, after failing to finish in Australia and Brazil, the fact that both cars made it to the finish line in San Marino gives cause for encouragement ahead of Sunday.

"We are delighted that both cars finished the race at Imola two weeks ago, but as a team we expect to win races," said team boss, Ron Dennis.

"There is no doubt we have the potential to win and are looking forward to the race at Silverstone."

David Coulthard is also confident of his chances in the race he won last season. "I won the British Grand Prix last year, and to claim victory in front of your home crowd is a fantastic feeling," said the Scot. " I would love to achieve the same again this year and I know that the team aims to win this race."

However, it is McLaren's freakish record at the Silverstone circuit that holds the most hope for the Woking-based team. McLaren has scored points in every World Championship event held at the circuit since their debut in 1966.
