Williams is planning to introduce its own version of the Red Bull Racing-type exhaust system for the Chinese Grand Prix.
With the development of exhaust systems set to become one the main development thrusts throughout 2011, Williams has spent the last few weeks working on its own version.
Technical director Sam Michael has told AUTOSPORT that it should have a race-ready version by the Shanghai event next month - and is hopeful about the step forward in pace it will deliver.
"We plan to have that exhaust system at the Shanghai Grand Prix," said Michael "It is quite a significant step, so hopefully that will take us quite a way up the grid.
"We started work on that system after Valencia. The first time we saw it was when Red Bull Racing ran it on the last day – and we've copied the idea. We tried out a Renault version and a Mercedes-Benz version, but it is the Red Bull Racing one we have committed to."
Michael said that Williams has had to spend longer than some other teams working on it because of where the collector was located on the Cosworth engine.
"We had the change the exhaust system quite a bit because of the way the collector is packaged. With us it is packaged backwards. If you had a forward collector and a U-bend, it would be easy to change it to the Red Bull idea.
"We spent 10 days on it a couple of weeks ago to try and get something for Melbourne, but we could not get it done in time."
