FIA bans wet moveable wings use

Renault's rear wing, 2011Formula 1 drivers will now be banned from using the moveable rear wing when track conditions are wet in practice and qualifying.

With the FIA keen to ensure that use of the moveable wing does not compromise safety, F1 race director Charlie Whiting informed the teams that there would be restrictions imposed on its use when the track is wet.

With the wing already banned from use in wet races when conditions and visibility are too bad, Whiting has now also decided that further limitations will take place at all other times that the cars are on track.

In a note set to the teams ahead of Friday practice for the Australian Grand Prix, Whiting said: "As discussed in the team managers meeting yesterday, I would like to confirm that for safety reasons the driver adjustable bodywork permitted by Article 3.18 of the Technical Regulations may not be operated in any practice session (including qualifying) if the car is fitted with intermediate or wet-weather tyres.

"Any driver using the adjustable bodywork whilst the car is fitted with intermediate or wet-weather tyres will be reported to the stewards as being in breach of Article 2.3 of the Technical Regulations (dangerous construction)."
