Heavy snow expected for Monte finish

Proton testing in the snowCrews on the Monte Carlo Rally are expecting conditions to get significantly more challenging as the event progresses, despite the opening stages seeing dry roads and sunny weather this morning.

The event's traditional unpredictable mixture of snow, ice and rain has been absent so far during the recce and the build-up, but forecasts suggest substantial snowfall for Friday's stages in particular.

Chris Mellors, head of the MEM team that is running Proton's programme, expects conditions to be very tough by the end of the rally.

"Our understanding is that there's some fairly severe weather coming," said Mellors.

"We're expecting snow tomorrow night and Friday night, with potentially quite a lot of snow on Friday.

"At the moment the roads are dry but it looks like that could all change so it could be a typical Monte."
