Ricciardo bounces back with pole

Daniel Ricciardo claimed his seventh Formula Renault 3.5 pole position of the season at Silverstone this morning

The Tech 1 racer was almost two tenths of a second faster than Fortec's Jon Lancaster, the unwitting culprit who sent Ricciardo flying in a spectacular startline crash in race one on Saturday.

"The team didn't deserve to be working until 5am this morning fixing the car," said Ricciardo. "Hopefully this is a good way to say thanks."

For his part in the accident, Briton Lancaster has been forced by race officials to start from the pitlane in this afternoon's race. Despite the penalty, Lancaster wished to compete in today's qualifying session to prove a point.

Following the disqualification of on road victor Esteban Guerrieri yesterday, Red Bull Formula 1 reserve driver Ricciardo is now the only realistic challenger to championship leader Mikhail Aleshin. The Carlin man qualified sixth today, one place behind Guerrieri.

P1 Motorsport's debutant Brendon Hartley will lead the second row. The Kiwi will not be dissatisfied to have qualified directly ahead of his replacement at Tech 1, British Formula 3 champion Jean-Eric Vergne.

The session was interrupted when Stefano Coletti crashed heavily after eight minutes. The Monegasque's Comtec entry sustained heavy damage to the left rear, and without a representative time, yesterday's 'podium' finisher - who gained third when Guerrieri was thrown out - will start from last.
