ORECA attempts to remain unbeaten
The ORECA Chrysler team is confident of maintaining their unbeaten record in the American Le Mans Series at the second round this weekend - despite never having tested on the Charlotte track before. The second round of the ALMS mirrors the track format of the Daytona 24 hours, with sections of steep banking contrasting the tight infield section
The ORECA team, with their three Chrysler Viper GTS-Rs, has entered all but three rounds of the series since its inception - and has won its class in every race it has contested. This season, they apparently mean to continue in the same vein, with all places on the podium at the first round of 2000 filled by ORECA Viper drivers.
"We have enjoyed tremendous success with the Viper since we started our American Le Mans series programme," said team director Hughes de Chaunac. However, the Frenchman accepts that the GTS class is becoming ever more competitive, with the new GM Corvette cars looking threatening.
"This year we are facing some tough competition in our class, and this has increased the challenge for our team," he admitted. "We cannot afford to make mistakes and throw away valuable points while we appear to have the advantage because everything could change later in the year.
"We will not delude ourselves into thinking we will have another unbeaten year," he warned.
