Brazilian Grand Prix: Lap by lap

Lap 1: Mika Hakkinen (McLaren) leads with Ferrari's Michael Schumacher in second. David Coulthard (McLaren) third, with Ferrari's Rubens Barrichello fourth

Lap 2: Schumacher takes Hakkinen to take lead, Barrichello takes Coulthard to move into second.

Lap 4: Top six: M Schumacher, Hakkinen, Barrichello, Coulthard, Eddie Irvine (Jaguar) and Giancarlo Fisichella. Schumacher has a 4s lead over the Finn.

Lap 5: Barrichello chasing Hakkinen. Schumacher leads by 5.1s.

Lap 6: M Schumacher breaks lap record to extend gap over Hakkinen to six seconds. Jarno Trulli (Jordan) takes Fisichella to move into sixth.

Lap 7: Hakkinen continues to be harried by Barrichello. Schumacher has 7.8s lead over the Finn. Alex Wurz (Benetton) retires with engine problems.

Lap 8: Ferrari's Schumacher extends lead to 9.8s.

Lap 9: Hakkinen faces pressure from Barrichello. Trulli catching fifth placed Irvine.

Lap 10: Top six: M Schumacher, Hakkinen, Barrichello, Coulthard, Irvine and Trulli. Nick Heidfeld's Prost retires with engine problem.

Lap 11: Jean Alesi (Prost) out of race, seemingly with engine trouble. Jos Verstappen (Arrows) up to seventh.

Lap 12: Schumacher records fastest lap (1.15.687s) and leads Hakkinen by 13.6s.

Lap 14: Barrichello overtakes Hakkinen to take second. Schumacher leads by 16.8s.

Lap 15: Trulli overtakes Irvine to take fourth. Barrichello extends lead over Hakkinen to 1.2s.

Lap 16: Top six: Schumacher, Barrichello, Hakkinen, Coulthard, Irvine, Trulli.

Lap 17: Barrichello eats into Schumacher lead, but remains 17.2s behind the German. Jacques Villeneuve retires his BAR.

Lap 18: Schumacher extends lead to 17.6s.

Lap 19: Ferrari mechanics prepare for pit-stop.

Lap 20: Rubens Barrichello leads, after Michael Schumacher pits. Schumacher rejoins in third.

Lap 21: Eddie Irvine retires after spinning his Jaguar into tyre wall. Ferrari prepare for Barrichello.

Lap 22: Barrichello pits, moving Hakkinen into lead.

Lap 23: Top six: Hakkinen, M Schumacher, Coulthard, Barrichello, Trulli, Verstappen.

Lap 24: Hakkinen leads by 7.1s

Lap 25: Hakkinen extends gap over Schumacher to 8.6s.

Lap 26: Barrichello coasting with blown engine.

Lap 27: Barrichello retires from home grand prix.

Lap 28: Mika Hakkinen pulling away from Schumacher - leads by 12s.

Lap 29: Top six: Hakkinen, Schumacher, Coulthard, Trulli, Verstappen and Fisichella.

Lap 30: Mika Hakkinen coast into pits with engine trouble to retire out of the race.

Lap 33: Top six: M Schumacher, Coulthard, Verstappen, Fisichella, Frentzen, Trulli.

Lap 34: Schumacher extends lead to 8.4s.

Lap 35: Jos Verstappen pits for tyres and fuel.

Lap 37: Schumacher's increases lead over Coulthard.

Lap 39: Gap between Schumacher and Coulthard is 7.6s.

Lap 40: Top six: M Schumacher, Coulthard, Fisichella, Frentzen, Trulli, R Schumacher.

Lap 41: Schumacher extends gap between himself and Coulthard. Heinz-Harald Frentzen pits for fuel and tyres.

Lap 42: McLaren mechanics prepare for Coulthard. Schumacher leads by 10.1s.

Lap 43: Coulthard pits for tyres and fuel.

Lap 44: Top six: M Schumacher, Coulthard, Fisichella, Trulli, R Schumacher and Button.
Schumacher leads by 38.8s. Button pits from sixth place.

Lap 46: Ralf Schumacher pits for tyres and fuel from fifth.

Lap 47: Schumacher leads by 42.4s, with Fisichella eight seconds behind second-placed Coulthard.

Lap 49: Top six: M Schumacher, Coulthard, Fisichella, Trulli, Frentzen, R Schumacher.

Lap 50: Ferrari mechanics prepare for Schumacher. The German pits at the end of the lap (7.7s stop).

Lap 51: Schumacher rejoins the race in first.

Lap 52: Schumacher leads by 24.4s, Coulthard second. Johnny Herbert retires his Jaguar from 10th.

Lap 53: Schumacher extends lead to 26.2s.

Lap 54: Top ten: M Schumacher, Coulthard, Fisichella, Trulli, Frentzen, R Schumacher, Verstappen, Button, de la Rosa, Zonta.

Lap 56: Pedro de la Rosa spins off track, but recovers to rejoin track.

Lap 57: Button overtakes Verstappen to take seventh.

Lap 58: M Schumacher, Coulthard, Fisichella, Frentzen, Trulli and R Schumacher.

Lap 60: Frentzen un-laps himself by taking Schumacher.

Lap 61: Schumacher records slower lap of 1.20.472s - losing four seconds to Coulthard.

Lap 62: Schumacher leads by 13.4s, after increasing pace.

Lap 63: Coulthard cuts lead by 12.4s.

Lap 64: Schumacher leads by 11.7s.

Lap 65: Top six: M Schumacher, Coulthard, Fisichella, Frentzen, Trulli, R Schumacher.

Lap 67: Schumacher leads Coulthard by 9.1s.

Lap 68: Coulthard eats into Michael Schumacher's lead. The gap is reduced to 7.5s.

Lap 69: Schumacher leads by 6.7s. Top six: M Schumacher, Coulthard, Fisichella, Frentzen, Trulli, R Schumacher.

Lap 70 Schumacher starts final lap 5.9s ahead of Coulthard.

Lap 71: Michael Schumacher wins.
