GM disappointed with Sebring result
The Corvette C5Rs of GM's Team Corvette failed to take the fight to the all-conquering Chrysler Viper GTRs in the Sebring 12 hours last weekend, to the chagrin of the team
After a strong second in the GTS class at Daytona, where the Corvette of Kneifel, Bell and Ron Fellows was less than 31 seconds behind the GTS leader after 24 hours racing, a win at Sebring had been desperately hoped for.
Unfortunately, the Corvettes all ran into trouble during the race, handing the win to Chrysler once again.
The number 4 car of Andy Pilgrim, Kelly Collins and Franck Freon fought back to 4th in class after having to replace a damaged nose, while the number 3 car of Chris Kneifel, Ron Fellows and Justin Bell ran strongly until a broken exhaust valve forced retirement.
After Fellows had qualified the car with a class-record time around the famous road course, there was cause for optimism throughout the Team Corvette camp. However, they will have to wait for the next American Le Mans Series event to prove the mettle of the C5R.
"Coming off the strong result at Daytona I think everyone, including myself, had high expectations," admitted Chris Kneifel. "This race was just one step forward and two steps back, and it just didn't happen for us... this wasn't our best effort as a team and we can do better."
