ORECA boss pleased with fourth
ORECA team boss Hughes de Chaunac says that his team can take comfort from bringing its petrol-powered prototype home in fourth place at Le Mans, despite losing its Peugeot 908 to engine failure late in the race
The Courage-based ORECA chassis and AIM-branded engine crept up the order in the hands of Soheil Ayari, Andy Meyrick and Didier Andre, assisted by the problems that afflicted the faster Aston Martins.
"It was a very hard race, with what happened to our Peugeot," he told AUTOSPORT. "It was ready to be P3, and because it was very quick, it could maybe have been second. It was a great frustration and I cannot believe that from four Peugeots we have gone to zero.
"It is incredible. We had two leading the race yesterday and all through the night, then at two o'clock this afternoon there are three Audis in front and no more Peugeot. Incredible.
"It's more than disappointing, it's very hard. Sure, Le Mans is a special race, but this one has not been very nice for Peugeot and for us, even though our other car finished fourth.
"Something, somewhere, wanted the race to prove that ORECA is one of the strongest long-distance cars. We did not get the result with the Peugeot, but on a very low budget we proved that we could put a car just behind the Audis. That's something with special meaning for ORECA."
