Spectator dies on first Dakar stage

A spectator was killed during an accident on the opening stage of the Dakar Rally yesterday.

A statement from race organiser ASO named the fatality as Sonia Natalia Gallardo, who died in hospital after being struck by the Desert Warrior of German driver Mirco Schultis in an accident 75 kilometres into Saturday's Buenos Aires to Cordoba stage.

The ASO said Gallardo was among a group of spectators standing in an area which was not part the designated spectator zones set up to ensure safe viewing.

Several other people were treated in hospital for minor injuries.
