Ricciardo eyes Red Bull test role

Daniel RicciardoDaniel Ricciardo has set his sights on becoming Red Bull's test and reserve driver after an impressive first Formula 1 outing in Jerez testing on Tuesday.

The British Formula 3 champion completed more laps than anybody else and ended up fourth quickest of the 12 drivers that were on track.

When asked by AUTOSPORT about his plans, the 20-year-old Australian, who will race for Tech 1 in Formula Renault 3.5 next year, said: "It would be great to get something like that for 2010.

"We'll see how this test goes first, but not much has been touched on that just yet. If this test goes well then that position could be up for grabs."

Red Bull team boss Christian Horner said that he had been very impressed with Ricciardo's performance during the day, despite an early spin.

"Our engineers were already very pleased with the work he's done in the simulator, and he's had a very good first day in the car too," Horner told AUTOSPORT. "Over 110 laps and no real signs of fatigue either.

"The spin did not affect him at all, and he showed a lot of maturity to do as well as he did afterwards.

"We'll see how this test goes, but he's a very promising young talent who is developing well. We'll analyse this test and make a decision [on the test and reserve driver role] over the winter."
