Weaver on provisional Daytona pole

Britain's James Weaver is on provisional pole position for this weekend's Daytona 24 Hours sportscar classic

The two-time winner of the race headed the time sheets in first qualifying with a time of 1m41.002s at the wheel of his Dyson team Riley & Scott-Lincoln MkIII.

Weaver, who started from pole at Daytona last year, said: "The car is five years old and probably knows its own way around this place.

"We've got a new development engine from Lozano and some great tyres from Goodyear, so it's business as usual.

"I was hoping to get into the 39s, but it started to drizzle at the end of the session."

Second fastest was the Risi Competizione Ferrari 333SP driven by Alex Caffi, who set a best time of 1m42.010s.

The former GP driver said: "It's a good day for me. Daytona is a very important race. What's more, I can't remember the last time I started from the front row."

Third best in the 15-minute session was Scott Schubot in a Ford-engined R&S MkIII with a time of 1m42.220s.

Stefan Johansson in his Johansson-Matthews Motorsport Reynard-Judd 2KQ was 0.08s behind.

Fastest in the GT0 class was the lead Chevrolet Corvette C5-R driven by Canadian Ron Fellows.

The first of the factory Chrysler Vipers was surprisingly four seconds slower in the hands of Tommy Archer. Best in GTU was the Dick Barbour Racing Porsche 911 GT3-R driven by Dirk Muller.

The Daytona 24 Hours is the first round of the new Grand American Road Racing Championship.
