NHL crew member dies after fight

Newman Haas Lanigan Racing crew member David Evans died after a suffering a stroke during a fight outside a restaurant in Indianapolis yesterday.

The 63-year-old Briton, who had been an engineer for the IndyCar Series team for over 20 years, reportedly got into a fight with another man outside the restaurant.

He was found lying, unresponsive on the ground and was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A coroner ruled yesterday that Evans died of a stroke which was induced by the stress of the fight.

A man, who has not been named, was released after being questioned by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police.

Newman Haas general manager Brian Lisles paid tribute to his long-time colleague.

"If you ask anyone here to describe him in one word, it would be a gentleman," he told the Indianapolis Star.

"One of the things that we grieve about the most is not only losing him, but that his final moments in this world were totally atypical of how he lived his life. He was a quiet, thoughtful person who just went out to have a meal and a beer, was walking back to the hotel when this happened.

"We would like to see the person who started this brought to justice."
