Sordo crashes out in SS1 in Mexico

Dani Sordo has crashed out of the Rally Mexico in the first stage of day one.

The Citroen driver was third-fastest at the stage's opening split, but went off the road before the halfway point and was unable to rejoin.

Sordo's accident continues Citroen's difficult start to the rally, with his teammate Sebastien Loeb having already suffered an engine problem during yesterday's shakedown.

He was initially given a five-minute time penalty for changing the engine, but this was rescinded when Citroen put the original engine back in the car, having carried out repairs to the fuel system without affecting the areas covered by the FIA seals.

Loeb runs fourth after the first stage, behind Jari-Matti Latvala (Ford), Chris Atkinson (Subaru) and Gigi Galli (Stobart Ford).

Sordo's incident was one of several in SS1, with Subaru's Petter Solberg losing several seconds after hitting a stray dog and later developing brake problems, and Suzuki driver Toni Gardemeister dropping six minutes due to intermittent throttle issues.
