Grosjean feels he will improve
F3 Euro Series champion Romain Grosjean thinks there is plenty more speed to come from him after just being pipped to provisional pole position at the Macau Grand Prix
Grosjean had confirmed his place as one of the pre-event favourites by topping Thursday morning's free practice session, but he then found himself caught up in a crash with rival Stephen Jelly that left his car badly damaged.
It took Grosjean's ASM team until halfway through the first qualifying session to get his car repaired enough for him to take to the track - and even then he found that his steering was not completely straight.
Speaking to autosport.com after first qualifying, where Marko Asmer claimed provisional pole position, Grosjean said he was relieved at first just to have made it out on the track.
"I was feeling quite sad after this morning," he said. "It was so disappointing to crash and I was a little bit worried at a certain point whether or not I would make it back out again.
"But the team did a really good job. All the mechanics were working on the car to get it fixed. It was a real team effort.
"We will still need to check the balance and the weight balance, as we did not have time to make it right. It was also quite good fun to not have the steering wheel straight on the straight - it was pulling to the left."
But having got to within two tenths of a second of Asmer despite the problems, Grosjean is optimistic about closing the gap in tomorrow's final qualifying session.
"The most important thing is the time at the end of the session, but the car was good and I am sure we can improve the car more," he explained.
"I didn't do half of qualifying, so it was quite hard when I went out to see the grip of the track. We will push tomorrow for pole position."
