Gordon fined, placed on probation

Robby Gordon has been further penalized by NASCAR following incidents involving him in the closing laps of the Busch Series race at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal last Saturday

NASCAR announced that Gordon, who drives and owns the No 55 Ford he raced at Montreal, has been fined US $35,000 and placed on probation until the end of the year, following his first punishment, which was levied on Sunday when he was not allowed to race in the Nextel Cup event at Pocono.

Gordon disobeyed NASCAR's instructions to position his car for the last restart of Saturday's Busch race in Montreal after a caution came out at the same time he had an incident with Marcos Ambrose while fighting for the lead.

He then wrecked the Australian and fellow Ford driver out of the lead on the restart, and did not park his car after officials black-flagged him in the last lap while being at the front of the field. He also celebrated victory with burnouts and tried to drive his car to Victory Lane.

"If he does anything that we consider conduct detrimental to [the sport] or if he in any way disrupts the orderly running of an event he will be suspended indefinitely," NASCAR Vice President of Corporate Communications Jim Hunter advised.

"Anything we deem inappropriate. The magnifying glass just got bigger on Robby Gordon."

PJ Jones drove Gordon's No 7 car at Pocono last Sunday, finishing 37th. Gordon sits 29th in the Nextel Cup standings.

Also penalized for infractions at Montreal were Stephen Leicht and his car owner Robert Yates, both losing 25 driver and owner points for modifications found on the front shock absorbers of the No 90 car in the post-race inspection. Leicht's crew chief was also fined US $10,000.

A similar penalty was issued for Patrick Carpentier and his team for exceeding the limit on the front spring inside and outside coil diameter, their crew chief being fined also US $5,000.

Bobby Hamilton Jr' crew chief was also fined US $2,000 as well as Mike MacKenzie's, for other infractions that took place during the event.
