Heidfeld confident of new BMW deal
Nick Heidfeld remains confident that he will secure a fresh contract with BMW Sauber for next season, despite speculation in Montreal that talks about a new deal are stalling
The German has impressed this season to emerge as Ferrari and McLaren's main challenger, but he has not yet secured his future with his Hinwil-based team.
There have been suggestions that Heidfeld's management team and BMW are deadlocked over the financial details for next year, and sources have revealed to autosport.com that Heidfeld has approached several rival teams, including Honda Racing, to sound them out about deals.
But speaking in Montreal, Heidfeld played down talk that he was seriously searching for options elsewhere and said that he was still only looking at remaining where he currently is.
"Nothing is decided at the moment, but I am very optimistic that I will stay with BMW Sauber," said Heidfeld.
BMW motorsport director Mario Theissen declined to comment on Heidfeld's situation, insisting that nothing would be said until an official announcement was made.
"I will not comment on it (Heidfeld's future)," he said. "I will say something when we know about next year's driver line-up, but not before."
