Dennis reckons night race can be safe
McLaren team boss Ron Dennis is confident racing can be made safe enough to guarantee a night Formula One Grand Prix
Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone is keen to have night racing in countries like Australia or Singapore in order to boost television audiences in Europe, but there have been concerns that it might not be safe enough for the drivers.
Dennis says his team are in favour of a night Grand Prix, and he reckons the required safety standards can be met.
"We are absolutely in favour, provided the races are safe, and I think they can be," Dennis told Autosprint magazine. "If we must have a late night to race somewhere, we'll do it.
"The only problem is: what happens if there is a power outage? You could object that a system with emergency generators could be efficiently set up. But it's a rather costly matter.
"I've thought about it and I concluded that if there was a mobile, specifically-designed system, with its cost to be shared among the various circuits, then it could be taken from one place to another, avoiding the ugly sight of a useless lighting structure."
