Gordon could miss a race for baby
Mark Martin could replace Jeff Gordon later this season if the championship leader's wife gives birth on a race weekend
Gordon's wife is expected to give birth towards the end of June, and the Hendrick Motorsports driver has made it clear that he is prepared to miss a race if it clashes with a Nextel Cup event.
"I wouldn't miss that for anything. I love racing, but not that much," Gordon was quoted as saying by the Associated Press.
Martin has admitted that he hopes Gordon doesn't have to miss a race, but he added that he will push hard if he gets the opportunity to race the famous number 24 car.
"I really admire Jeff's priorities," Martin said. "I'm no Jeff Gordon, but I won't just be driving to finish if it turns out that I do have to drive that car."
Gordon currently has a championship lead of more than 200 points, and the Chase for the Championship format in NASCAR means that it is unlikely to harm his title charge if he misses a race.
