New Zealand's Reid on Sentul pole

Jonny Reid has narrowly taken pole position for tomorrow's sprint race at Sentul after a thrilling qualifying session

Reid's aggregate time over two laps was just 0.034 seconds faster than last year's pole-sitter Robbie Kerr, who had to settle for second.

The Brit was two tenths faster than series leaders Germany, as Nico Hulkenberg had to settle for third after spending much of the session on top of the timesheets.

Reid, Kerr and others couldn't match Hulkenberg's time in the final sector of the lap for the majority of the session, but both went faster on their final run, while Hulkenberg admitted to making a slight error.

It is the second pole of the season for Reid, who started from the front at Brno, but collided with Hulkenberg at the start of the sprint race there.

"We've shown on several occasions that we've had the pace," said Reid, "and the team made a few small changes for the final run which worked well.

"This time we'll be making sure we get through that first corner though."

Hulkenberg said he was 'very satisfied' to be third after struggling slightly in practice, and the German will be the favourite for the race if the expected rain comes early enough.

Salvador Duran showed that he was back on form after a disappointing round in Malaysia for Mexico, while Phil Giebler completed the top five for Team USA.
