France heads practice 1 at Sentul

Team France continued to move back towards the front in A1GP by setting the fastest time in practice on Friday

Nicolas Lapierre was less than one tenth of a second faster than Great Britain's Robbie Kerr, with Ryan Briscoe third quickest for Australia.

"Everywhere we go this season we have to work a little bit harder because everybody else has got quicker. The car is looking good here, and we were fast last year so I'm optimistic," said Lapierre.

Kerr had to be on the pace though, as his teammate Oliver Jarvis set the pace in the rookie sessions during the morning.

One of the stars of the session was South Africa's Alan van der Merwe, who is preparing for his first race in more than two years.

The 2003 British F3 champion set the pace early on in the session, and he was closely followed by the fifth fastest car of Czech driver Jarek Janis, who is better known for his exploits in the FIA GT series of late.

Series leaders Germany were only eighth fastest, as Nico Hulkenberg had to make do without competing in the rookie sessions for the first time this season.

Fellow race-winners Malaysia also struggled, with Alex Yoong only 19th fastest.
