Conway tipped for F1 glory

Former F1 engineer James Robinson, who worked with a host of big names including Ayrton Senna and Nelson Piquet during spells at Williams, Arrows, McLaren, BAR and Jordan, engineered Conway this year on the way to winning the British F3 crown and Macau.

And although winning Macau is never a guarantee that a driver will make it into F1, Robinson has said he is convinced about Conway's potential.

"It is always difficult to say if someone will go all the way to F1, but Mike has got the speed and he has got the coolness," Robinson told autosport.com. "I think you can easily drop him into something.

"We saw what he did in GP2 - he just sits there and learns. That is what is nice with engineering him; you can work things through with him and concentrate on a corner. That is what we did here in Macau. We tried to focus on Turn 17. We knew we had to be good out of there. You can work with him like that and in F1 they will love that.

"Plus he has the speed and a lot of self belief. Sometimes when he does make that mistake, you think why has that happened, but he is good and let's hope he can move into the next series with a good team. I think if you go well here it is a sign that you will go well at most places."

Robinson thinks that one of Conway's biggest strengths is that he is so calm in his approach to racing. He proved that in Macau after coming through from 11th in qualifying after a big accident to take a spectacular win.

"He is very cool - probably one of the coolest guys I have worked with," added Robinson. "He is very calm and very talented. I would certainly recommend him to anybody who wants to take him on the next step because the potential is there for sure.

"If he does make a mistake, and we have had a couple this year, he walks away from it and you can sit down with him a little bit later and talk it through. That is always good."
