Skoda Motorsport boss Martin Muehlmeier has confirmed that the Czech Republic firm is looking into a 2008 World Rally Championship return with a new model Fabia WRC, this week's Autosport reports.
Skoda's official participation in the WRC ended last year, but the company has provided technical support to two teams contesting selected rounds of the series this season.
Muehlmeier said: "I would expect decisions in the Autumn. We are looking at a new car. I think the Octavia would be too big, but the new Fabia could be an interesting base. We haven't made any decisions yet.
"It is possible we could close down the programme and do nothing."
Skoda has continued to pay the fees associated with a WRC manufacturer, with Muehlmeier attending the meetings to ensure Skoda remains in touch with the series.
"Everything is possible," Muehlmeier continued. "But as for next year ... we have already seen that it takes two years to develop a car from the beginning, we couldn't do it sooner."
