Bridgestone tyre guru may skip next races

Schumacher and Grint in 2005Michael Schumacher could be without his Bridgestone tyre guru Kees van der Grint for the next two races, with the Dutchman still to decide if he flies to North America because of a recent operation on his eye.

Van der Grint is Bridgestone 's Senior Tyre Engineer and works very closely with Schumacher - having built up a rapport with the Ferrari driver about rubber choice and development programmes for years.

He officially provides the link between Ferrari and Bridgestone's technical staff over race weekends.

However, after the recent recurrence of an eye injury required two operations on his right eye, he is yet to decide if he boards an airplane before his eye is completely healed.

"Many years ago a tyre exploded near my face and the retina was scratched," said van der Grint. "It was fine until recently when I started seeing lines and everything was tilted to one side."
