Newey excited about Red Bull challenge

Adrian Newey says he is excited about the prospect of joining the Red Bull team next season after leaving McLaren

The 46-year-old Briton will join Red Bull as chief technical officer at the end of February next year after eight years at McLaren.

After having won several Championships with Williams and McLaren in the 1990s, Newey said it was time for a fresh challenge.

"I have been at McLaren for eight and a half years and feel that it is time for a change," said Newey. "I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at McLaren and have a great relationship with Ron and the team. Ron is a good friend both professionally and personally.

"My immediate focus is to continue working at McLaren to finalise the new MP4-21 ready for testing in January and its championship challenge in 2006.

"Red Bull is a much younger organisation but I am excited by the opportunity to develop the car, team and facilities working closely with Christian Horner and his colleagues.

"I have been impressed by their plans and their commitment. I will be joining Red Bull at the end of February."
