2017 Goodwood Festival of Speed rallying highlights announced

Rally cars from the last four decades will be in action on the Forest Rally Stage at the 2017 Goodwood Festival of Speed on June 29-July 2

The two key celebrations will be 20 years of World Rally Car regulations and the major Festival theme of 'Peaks of Performance - Motorsport's Game-Changers'.

A gaggle of current R5 rally cars will be present, while a collection of mighty Group B cars from the 1980s will include Audi Quattros, Lancia 037s and MG Metro 6R4s.

From the current era, the event will feature the public debut of the Proton Iriz R5 car, the platform for Proton's return to the World Rally Championship in WRC2.

The Proton will line up against state-of-the-art cars from Ford and Hyundai for the Festival's biggest assembly of R5 cars.

Making rather more sedate progress up the purpose-built rally stage in the grounds of Goodwood House will be the Austin Maxi crewed by three women in the 1970 London to Mexico World Cup Rally. Forty-seven years later, Bron Burrell is back at the wheel and competing once more, including this Goodwood debut.

One of the most unusual cars in action will be the Citroen 2CV BiBip Dakar, which was one of the most ambitious Dakar efforts ever from 2007.

The 1963 2CV features a reinforced chassis and two Citroen Visa engines to boost the power output to 100bhp. Sadly the car retired on the fourth stage due to suspension failure.

Star cars and drivers from the world of drifting will compete to be the Goodwood Festival of Speed drift champion.

Leading contenders will be Vaughn Gittin Jr in his Ford Mustang RTR, 'Mad' Mike Whiddett in his rotary-engined Mazda MX-5 Miata, Dean Kearney in his Dodge Viper and James Deane driving his Nissan Silvia.
