Phoenix IndyCar: Josef Newgarden fastest in practice for Penske

Josef Newgarden topped the timesheets in the sole practice session ahead of qualifying for Saturday night's Phoenix IndyCar race

Newgarden followed up his first Penske win last weekend at Barber Motorsports Park by setting a 19.1517-second lap with six minutes of Friday afternoon's two-hour session remaining.

Ed Carpenter Racing's JR Hildebrand was second fastest, 0.0427s behind, as he returned to action after missing Barber due to the hand injury he sustained in a last-lap collision with Mikhail Aleshin in Long Beach.

Hildebrand was followed in the order by Newgarden's three Penske team-mates, with Helio Castroneves third, Simon Pagenaud fourth and Will Power fifth.

Ganassi's Scott Dixon was top of the order for most of the first 90 minutes of the session and was fifth fastest in the end, the first Honda runner.

Points leader Sebastien Bourdais was seventh fastest, and was followed by the Ganassi pair Charlie Kimball and Tony Kanaan in eighth and ninth respectively.

Mikhail Aleshin completed the top 10 for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports.

Ed Carpenter had a frustrating session, sitting out most of it with engine problems that required his team to replace the fuel cell. He faces a race against time to be ready for the evening's qualifying session.

Windy conditions disrupted some of practice, with resultant dust storms causing more than one caution period, including one that in effect ended the session a few minutes early.
